Push for universities to have centralised ombuds system

The department of higher education, science and innovation is investigating the possible establishment of a university ombuds office in the university system.

Departmental spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said work would commence this year with the intention to provide Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Dr Blade Nzimande with “informed advice about the need for, the viability, terms of reference, and administrative requirements of such an office”.

“Part of the purpose of this investigation would be to engage with the current scope and functions of ombuds across the system, and assess their limitations and strengths,” said Mnisi.
