UJ, global agency partner for construction sector certification

The professionalisation of project management in South Africa received a major boost this week when the Project Management Institute (PMI) announced its partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to offer the PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) certification training.

UJ is the first and only academic institution in South Africa to be the authorised training partner to offer the PMI-CP certification training.

PMI is a global authority in project management. It is committed to advancing the project management profession by offering training and certification. The institute also develops global standards, conducts education, training, and research.

Certificate is globally recognised

PMI’s MD for Sub-Saharan Africa George Asamani explained the process. He said individuals with at least three years’ experience in the construction or built environment sector can enroll for the PMI-CP certification training. On passing the certification exam, the candidates will be awarded the PMI-CP certification.

“It is a globally recognised certificate in the construction industry,” said Asamani.

He said the certification is designed specifically for professionals in construction.

“It aims to equip individuals with the cutting-edge skills and knowledge required to successfully manage complex construction projects. Emphasising the application of best project management practices. These are tailored to the industry’s unique challenges,” he said in a statement.

“Individuals keen to pursue the PMI-CP certification need three years of on-the-job experience. This within the last 10 years in construction or built environment projects. To become PMI-CP certified, they must complete four foundational e-learning courses.”

Asamani said for individuals to become PMI-CP certified, they must complete the four courses. These are construction project communications and construction interface management. Construction contract and risk management; and construction scope and change order management. Then pass the certification exam.

Online courses also available at UJ

UJ now offers the four courses, and instructor-led training will commence in July 2024.

PMI also announced PM.Ideas, a South African training company. It is an authorised training partner to provide PMI-CP certification training across the continent.

“Individuals in South Africa can enroll for training at UJ, but can also use PM.Ideas,” explained Asamani.

PMI also has a partnership with built environment regulator. The South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP).

The SACPCMP describes its partnership with PMI as a “world-first partnership”. It aims to bring the benefits of international construction management training to its registered professionals.
