Lehlogonolo Frans Leso, 30, is a young hero who wears his uniform to work with pride. Working as a basic life supporter or driver in the emergency services division at East Rand Hospital, in Springs, east of Johannesburg, he always strives to be of service to others. (Siza, what is his job? The driver of an ambulance or is he a paramedic? Not clear.) He works a 12-hour shift that involves being called out to sites of car accidents or pedestrian accidents as well as attending to house calls involving trauma and transferring patients from hospital to hospital or clinic and vice versa. Anyone else can buckle under the workload but not Leso. “When I leave work at the end of my shift I know I’ve helped make a difference in the lives of my patients and their families,” he says. “Seeing the smiles on their faces and watching them improve makes me look forward to work.” His late mother, who passed away in January 2021 due to Covid-19, remains his role model who instilled in him values of service and fortitude. “She taught me how to live life and make wise choices, even in the most uncertain of situations. I will always respect her.”
