Despite holding a demanding corporate job, Malesiba Belvia Malebana, 28, has made it her daily routine to tutor and mentor learners and university students, without a charge. Malebana, who comes from Polokwane, Limpopa, but based in Johannesburg, works full-time as head of operational finance at the Absa’s stockbroker and portfolio managers’ wing. Every Tuesday to Thursday, she conducts tutoring sessions between 7pm to 8pm at the I Care, a foundation that aims to alleviate the plight of street children through education, financial and food support and skill development programmes. She has been volunteering as head tutor and mentor since 2016. “I tutor in subjects such as business management, economics, finance, mathematics and accounting,” says Malebana. “Some of my pupils have passed matric and others are university graduates.” Her teaching skills are effective as “some went from failing modules to getting distinctions”. Malebana also heads up the Motherless Child Campaign, an organisation involved in raising funds to assist provide shelter and day-to-day needs for the children. In addition, on weekends she takes part in community development projects with two non-profit organisations – the Christian Revel Children’s Home and Door of Hope. Malebana, a Sunday school teacher since her high school days, holds a Bachelor of Commerce in economics and econometrics, Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in economics and Master of Commerce from the University of Johannesburg. “I love kids,” she concludes.
