Vutlhari Nkuna is an ambitious and goal-driven young man who wants to bring about change within the South African society through arts and culture. The 20-year-old second-year BA law student at the University of Pretoria is the founder of Finding Utopia, a cultural movement he established when he was only 16. The movement aims to assist the youth to express themselves through arts, culture, and sports. Additionally, his ambition is to produce young people who are not fearful to stand up for their rights and to create conversations around issues of physical abuse, sexual assault, mental health, and depression. “I am passionate, ambitious, and goal-driven. I am looking forward to impacting society through the medium of arts, music, fashion, fine arts, and poetry,” says Nkuna. Three years ago, on March 9, 2019, Nkuna held a successful exhibition expo at his former school in Rustenburg. The exhibition focused on issues affecting youth, and these included, among others, racism, xenophobia, discrimination based on sexual orientation, and gender-based violence. Participants in the exhibition included keynote speakers, poets, and musicians. It also featured a fashion show and artwork display. The movement continues to engage with a variety of societal stakeholders. Presently, Nkuna is assisting a high school in Pretoria to tackle social, cultural, and other challenges facing the learners. He says: “The movement Finding Utopia seeks to play a role towards creating a better world.”
