More info:

Trading skills with aspiring art practitioners and going beyond for the community is what Khauhelo Maikhi from Botshabelo in the Free State is known for. He holds a BA Drama and Theatre Arts degree and has been active in the professional-artistic space for the past 10 years. The performer, writer, director, stage manager and theatre technician was recognised as the best writer for his 100% Sesotho show titled "Lesedi", under the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State’s capacity-building programme. His acclaimed script "The Masks", which speaks on the challenges of the LGBTQI+ communities, has been approved and funded by the National Arts Council and has gone on a national theatre tour. The artist’s passion stretches beyond art, his heart also beats for inclusive education. This can be seen through his school tours, where he writes shows about socially relevant issues to provoke discussions and awareness. From his relatively small home, Maikhi holds workshops for young people interested in taking over the artistic space. He also volunteers at schools with creative-art classes. Coming from humble beginnings, he has reached and traded skills with the youth in and around the Free State. What he is looking forward to in being an Unsung Hero is the opening of more doors for his work, as helping others can be challenging because of the lack of support and resources.
