Looking at the high youth unemployment rate in her community, Thaba Nchu-born Naledi Phahlo knew she was destined for the entrepreneurial route. Through this realisation, coupled with an interest in owning a business in the chemical space and a love for mathematics, DeeDee Hygiene Solutions was established. The business-intelligence analyst’s establishment, which manufactures affordable, quality and biodegradable detergents for household and industrial use, is eradicating youth unemployment by employing eight young people. Phahlo’s intentions for her community’s youth are not only job creation, but empowerment and self-reliance. According to her, fighting unemployment among young people requires a long-term commitment from various stakeholders. Young people should realise that everyone has their own unique gifts which can earn them a sustainable living. During Covid-19, she offered her services to churches for free to ensure they remained safely open. She also donated face shields, sanitisers and masks in Thaba Nchu. Phahlo has won business competitions from various organisations, including the  South African Breweries.
