20
Project Name/Description:
At his tender age, Pfarelo Maphangule can be considered a philanthropist who sets the needs of the community above his own. The 20-year-old from Tembisa is the founder and chairperson of Youth Leadership Organisation, a registered NPO that focuses on giving back to the community. Maphangule has impacted over 2000 young people and over 150 families who have received food parcels and donations from his work. Since 2018, he has done a lot for the community through various projects. When the philanthropist was in grade 12, he became part of the Congress of South African Students, working with the district office in Johannesburg to assist most schools in Ivory Park, Kaalfontein and Ebony. In 2021, he was named one of the finalists for the Young Essay Writers Africa. The third-year Bachelor of Education student at the UFS has hosted over 40 different motivational talks, empowering young people in different schools, some stretching as far as the Free State. “To me, being an Unsung Hero means that the work I do in my community and in other provinces is being noticed and will serve as a motivation to continue doing it,” states Maphangule. The accolade will also shine some light on the work that has already been done, thereby paving a way for greater things to come.
