Rorisang Gomolemo Thage
Nominee's Province:
Gauteng
Age:
27
Project Name/Description:
As the first and only lecturer permanently employed in mine surveying, Rorisang Gomolemo Thage has been a junior lecturer at the Unisa Department of Mining Engineering since 2018. She is also the only professional mine surveyor in South Africa whose research focuses on open pit mine planning. This is understandable, considering her list of academic accolades. With a B.Tech in Mineral Resources Management (UJ), Masters in Mine Planning (Unisa) and a pending PhD in the same field, it is small wonder The Woman of Stature Foundation acknowledged her as one of the top-five finalists in the category of Women in Engineering in March 2022. Her undisputed contribution in South African engineering called for the honour. The young mine surveyor also received an award from the Womandla Foundation in August 2022 in the Rising Star category for Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. She also serves on the Institute of Mine Surveyors of Southern Africa's governing council as a co-opted member of the committee responsible for education. “As a young woman, I have a strong belief that education liberates one from the chains of poverty and equips knowledge-consumers with a certain level of intelligence. Therefore, I am of the view that education affords the youth, young women in particular, with many opportunities that often see them taking up prominent roles both in the public and private sectors,” Thage concludes.
