Project Name/Description:
Founder of Lesedi Institute of Education and Development, Satsope George Makola, is focused on delivering quality education in the rural villages under the Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality in Limpopo. According to Makola, the lack of access to learning materials, computers and information is still a major social problem in the disadvantaged villages in Limpopo and that is why the Lesedi Institute of Education and Development exists. Not only does Makola have a great passion for education and development, but he also founded the first library based in Bakoneng Village. The 27-year-old did not complain about the situation or give in to it, he changed it. No more would the people from his village have to commute to the nearest townships to access a public library. “Three years ago, I identified an old, unused two-room house. My team and I renovated the building and turned it into a library,” he states. With more than 2 000 books collected from donors, scholars and public school, learners from various schools started using the facility for homework, assignments, research, studying and reading. “We also help Grade 12 learners with university applications for free. This includes registration fees and basic computer training to prepare them for university. The library initiative contributes to improved performance by Grade 12 learners and improves the literacy level in the community and surrounding villages.”
