More info:

An advanced midwifery specialist and senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria, Dr Maurine Musie always dreamed of being an influential healthcare professional. “I find great fulfillment in witnessing the miracle of childbirth and ensuring safe outcomes for mothers and babies,” she shares. Dr Musie’s passion extends beyond the delivery room, as she also finds joy in teaching and mentoring aspiring midwives and nurses, shaping the future of midwifery in South Africa. In 2015, Dr Musie broke barriers as the first black female student to be awarded cum laude in Nursing Sciences at the University of Pretoria. Her subsequent accolades include the Emergent Research Excellence Award and various recognitions by the National Research Foundation as well as the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation. She has also been profiled as one of the youngest women in STEM and earned the Woman in Education and Training Award by Woman of Stature South Africa, feats which she describes as incredibly humbling. Dr Musie founded the Qualitative Research and Data Analysis hub at the University of Pretoria, supporting young female researchers. Additionally, she pioneers a project aimed at achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 – good health and well-being – by implementing innovative approaches to manage obstetrical emergencies through professional development for midwives. Promoting diversity and inclusion in entrepreneurship, she believes, is crucial for creating innovative and inclusive businesses, ensuring opportunities are based on merit and drive, not socioeconomic background. “Entrepreneurship empowers young people to take control of their futures, fostering independence and self-reliance.”
