Lecturer – North-West University
Florence Shange hails from the dusty streets of Letlhabile, Brits, in the North-West province. She serves as a lecturer at North-West University, within the faculty of education. Throughout her career, she has taken on various academic roles, serving as a lecturer at esteemed institutions across South Africa. “As a young woman, I've always sought to carve out my place in the world, driven by an unwavering desire for growth and impact,” she says. Shange holds a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instructional Design and Development, earned with distinction. She’s currently busy with her PhD at the University of Pretoria. Beyond academia, Shange is the proud founder and project manager of a non-governmental organisation called Promise and Prosperity Youth Development Organisation. “Our programmes range from sanitary pad drives for high school girls to career exhibitions for grade 11 and 12 learners, from soup drives aiding homeless individuals to initiatives supporting disadvantaged matric pupils in experiencing the joy of their matric dance,” she explains. According to Shange, South Africa’s education system has seen remarkable progress over the past 30 years. “Efforts have been made to ensure fair access to quality education for all. However, despite these advancements, challenges persist. While significant strides have been taken to broaden access to education since the end of apartheid, disparities in the quality of education persist. Many schools lack essential infrastructure and resources.”
