Professor Thandiwe Sithole is an associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg and a top voice in driving sustainability. Her work focuses on circular economy principles, waste valorisation, solidification and wastewater treatment using secondary resources. She’s gained international acclaim for her research, which aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. “Transforming industrial solid waste into valuable products is not just about environmental sustainability; it's about creating economic opportunities and fostering growth in new industries,” she explains. In 2023, Prof Sithole received the NRF Research Excellence Award for Early Career/Emerging Researchers and the Vice-Chancellor Distinguished Emerging Researcher Award. Her publication record is impressive, with over 55 papers in prestigious journals. “My passion is driven by the development of young people in South Africa. Empowering the next generation and providing them with opportunities to succeed is crucial,” she says.
