Creating a New Legacy Through Arts and Academics
“I’m building more than an academy — I’m building hope,” says Albert Shangu Zitha, a cultural entrepreneur, applied drama practitioner, and mentor. Through his academy, he’s created a safe space where learners can reflect, express themselves, and grow — blending academics, performing arts, and entrepreneurship into a transformative community model. In Etwatwa, Johannesburg, this 34-year-old founder and CEO of Sir Alba Tutoring and Arts Academy has turned a personal mission into a movement. What started in a Zozo classroom at Zamukhanyo Primary has grown into a full-fledged academy serving over 160 learners each month. His passion is rooted in lived experience — poverty, substance abuse, and a lack of opportunity shaped his early years. But he built a path forward through relentless community engagement and a deep commitment to youth development. A major milestone came when learners from his academy qualified to represent South Africa at international dance and arts competitions in Spain, the USA, and Croatia. Under his leadership, the academy now employs 18 people and runs in partnership with local schools, churches, and community organisations. Zitha has also earned his Master of Arts from Wits University and was recognised with a 2024 Ekasi Township Economy Award. “Lack of funding and infrastructure pushed me to innovate,” he says. “We had to design sustainable models, improve standards, and adapt constantly.” Zitha’s ultimate goal is clear: to make quality academic and arts education accessible and equitable for all. His academy continues to produce high achievers and qualified staff — proving what grassroots leadership can achieve.
