Project Name/Description:
Born in Queenstown, and raised between Mossel Bay and the Eastern Cape, Anele Silo’s journey is a compelling story of resilience and purpose. Now a professional in the financial services sector, Anele is also pursuing further studies in Data Analytics and Business Intelligence — all while leading Edukasi, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to empowering youth from under-resourced communities across South Africa. Silo saw firsthand how education — or the lack thereof — could shape one’s future. It was this reality that sparked a passion within him: to break generational barriers and open pathways for others. His journey has been guided by the values of leadership, integrity, and a profound belief in community. The idea for Edukasi was born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, a time when many students were facing academic, mental, and social challenges. The spark that set Anele’s mission ablaze came during an encounter with Dr. Mandla Gantsho, a successful professional from a neighbouring village. Witnessing Dr. Gantsho’s humility and commitment to giving back inspired Silo to believe that greatness could come from the most overlooked places. Edukasi creates access to information, mentorship, and psychosocial support for young people who need someone to believe in their potential. These programs have reached over 350 young people across townships and rural communities, connecting them with mentors and exposing them to opportunities they previously thought were out of reach. Among Silo’s proudest achievements is the establishment of a fully funded early childhood development centre in his home village — Bhadi Preschool. From financial hurdles to scepticism about young people leading change, Silo has faced his fair share of obstacles. Yet, he has met each one with consistency, innovation, and faith. Reflecting on his journey, Silo speaks with deep appreciation for the resilience and talent within South Africa’s rural and township communities. He’s learned that leadership doesn’t require perfect conditions — just heart, purpose, and a willingness to serve.
