Turning Trauma Into Laughter

More info:

For Arlene Brenda Petersen, comedy isn’t just entertainment — it’s healing, resistance, and hope. At 35, this award-winning comedian, speaker, and MC is using sharp wit and raw honesty to turn personal pain into public purpose. She’s become a bold voice on South Africa’s comedy circuit, challenging mental health stigma and celebrating survival — especially for youth on the Cape Flats. Her journey began in tragedy: the loss of her twin brother to gang violence. “It felt like my nerve endings were outside my body,” she recalls. But she chose to channel that grief into action — creating That Comedy Chick, a persona and platform for resilience. Her comedy makes you laugh, then think. She tackles depression, grief, gender dynamics, and gangsterism — encouraging young people to believe in something beyond survival. Her big break came in 2023, when she won the Artes Award at the Baxter Theatre, recognising her as one of Cape Town’s Top 10 Influential Artists. Arlene speaks openly about her missteps — how early mistakes nearly pushed her out of the industry. But she pivoted online, rebuilt her reputation, and created a brand that now commands national attention. She’s building more than a career — she’s creating a legacy of empowerment for young women, especially from the Cape Flats. Through workshops and mentorship, she’s helping others find their voice. “Once you believe in yourself, the rest of the world will follow.” Judging by her sold-out shows and growing impact, they already are.
