Raised in an informal settlement without electricity or running water, Liziwe Nompumza knows the weight of disadvantage—and the power of determination. With no mentors in sight, she made a quiet promise to herself: get good grades, go to university, and build a better future. That promise became her lifeline. Through grit and faith, she turned it into reality. “In 2023, I celebrated a proud milestone—being admitted as an attorney. But my dream didn’t stop there. Driven by a desire to make legal support accessible, I founded LA Nompumza Attorneys to offer affordable, quality legal services to South Africans often left behind,” she says. Her path wasn’t without setbacks. Financial hardship nearly derailed her studies, but a final-year bursary reminded her that perseverance and prayer can open doors. Today, she offers free legal services to domestic violence survivors in Gauteng and recently launched a nonprofit supporting women and children from underserved communities. Her motivation is clear: to build a legacy of impact. “I know how it feels to have nothing—that keeps me hustling,” she says. Liziwe hopes to be remembered not just as one of South Africa’s top attorneys, but as someone who rose above her circumstances and brought others with her.
