Mojakgomo Kopano Mawela is a final-year Medical Sciences student at the University of Limpopo who is a firm believer in the power of hard work and is driven by her passion for advancing knowledge in medicine and contributing meaningfully to healthcare. Besides pursuing a career in the medical field, Mawela is also venturing into entrepreneurship with the establishment of her business, K-Safety. According to Mawela, K-Safety, founded in 2024, specialises in a unique self-defence product—a 3-in-1 device comprising a mini sharp knife, pepper spray bottle, and key chain. “The main aim of K-safety is to provide safety. We live in a country that has a high level of crime. I aim at offering my fellow citizens peace of mind so that they can protect themselves. One doesn’t have to wait until they are a victim or someone they know to make means of getting themselves a self-defence product,” explains Mawela. She adds that each sale they make is much bigger than just a transaction but rather a method of providing their customers with the gift of safety. “I believe that everyone needs to get themselves a pepper spray—a guardian angel in a can.” Mawela believes that over the past 30 years of democracy in South Africa, youth-led enterprises and entrepreneurial ventures have been a major force behind innovation, empowerment and economic progress. “These youthful business owners create new chances for themselves and other members of their communities by bringing new ideas, vitality and innovation to the market.”
