Project Name/Description:
Founder: Bringing Maths to Life
Many South African learners continue to perform poorly in maths and science—two essential subjects for tertiary education and STEM careers. Kgaugelo Mohlala, a qualified maths teacher at Kgwadu Primary School with over seven years of experience, is working to change this. She is passionate about mathematics and known for her creativity in making the subject accessible and engaging. Mohlala wants to dispel the myth that maths is only for a select few. “My project seeks to inspire a genuine love for mathematics by making it relatable, practical, and meaningful. Through hands-on activities, real-world applications, and creative teaching strategies, we encourage deep conceptual understanding instead of surface-level memorisation,” she explains. Her goal is to foster a positive, inclusive learning environment where all learners—regardless of background or ability—can succeed in maths. The project also aims to lay a strong foundation in maths to help learners perform well in STEM subjects from Grade 10 onwards. Mohlala believes that equipping learners with essential mathematical skills will better prepare them for participating in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In the long term, her goal is to cultivate a lasting passion for maths within the school community and beyond—changing mindsets and helping learners see the subject as both relevant and enjoyable.
