More info:

Precious Lesupi started Queers Code in 2023 to tackle the lack of inclusion, access, and representation for LGBTQIA+ individuals and other marginalised groups in tech and innovation. She says the idea was inspired by her own experiences of exclusion and invisibility in both academic and professional tech spaces. “I’m autistic and love learning, but most learning apps and platforms don’t cater for my sensory needs,” she explains. In addition to running Queers Code, she is studying towards a BA (Hons) in Visual Studies at the University of Pretoria and works as a Data Security Engineer at Cybersec Clinique. She also contributes to several international initiatives, including the BRICS Business Council and UN Women Rights Defenders. Lesupi believes LGBTQIA+ individuals are still locked out of critical areas where they could gain practical skills and engage meaningfully in the economy. Queers Code aims to address this by offering training in data science, cybersecurity, robotics and AI—while creating safe, supportive learning spaces. “The initiative focuses on three core areas: inclusive tech education for underrepresented identities, practical skills in emerging technologies, and mentorship with exposure to global innovation ecosystems,” she says. The programme includes workshops, expos, international collaborations, and academic engagements. Her long-term vision is to turn Queers Code into a continent-wide movement. This includes setting up regional hubs and academies, launching a queer-led tech incubator, and scaling STEAM education and teacher training across Africa.
