Founder: Breaking Silence – Empowering Deaf Talent in the Arts

More info:

Rotshidzwa Netshikweta is currently studying at UNISA and is the founder of Breaking Silence, an arts project that gives deaf and disabled artists a platform to showcase their work. The idea grew from his own childhood observations of how people with disabilities—especially in rural areas—were often sidelined or underestimated. “Their talents weren’t hidden because they lacked skill, but because they lacked opportunity, access, and support,” he says. Their first event at Fulufhelo Special School featured performances and artworks by learners with disabilities. The goal was to give them visibility and build their confidence, while also changing public perceptions around disability and inclusion. Netshikweta works closely with the Gundo Langa Foundation, and his team includes volunteers, interpreters, local artists, and youth facilitators. Funding remains one of the biggest challenges. “Projects focusing on disability inclusion in the arts are often overlooked,” he says. To overcome this, he successfully applied for support from the National Arts Council. His long-term vision includes expanding the initiative across Southern Africa, launching a national arts festival for disabled artists, and developing training programmes for teachers, interpreters, and facilitators to embed inclusive arts education. “I’m motivated by the untapped potential in people society often overlooks. Start where you are, with what you have. Let your passion drive your purpose, and don’t wait for perfect conditions.”
