Sibulele Mene is the founder of Applift, a virtual talent show app for performers, singers, dancers, actors, and comedians—especially those based in rural areas and townships. A part-time UNISA student, Mene says the app was born out of a personal frustration: the lack of platforms for young people with raw talent in the performing arts. “Applift allows artists to enter monthly competitions by simply uploading a video and sharing it to gain votes. Winners can receive cash prizes, mentorship, scholarships, and even brand deals,” he explains. “They don’t need to travel to the city or know anyone in the industry.” Mene says unlike social media platforms—which tend to reward popularity and virality—Applift is designed to recognise and nurture raw talent. “Social media wasn’t built to discover and develop talent. Its algorithms reward fame, not potential,” he argues. Beyond recognition, Applift offers structured competitions, real opportunities, and career-building support. Mene believes it could help ease youth unemployment, currently hovering at around 45%. “We’re sitting on a massive pool of overlooked talent. Many young people are stuck, excluded, and simply need a chance,” he says.
