From the vibrant township of Tembisa to international newsrooms, Tshegofatso Magolego, a social justice champion, has carved out a bold and necessary space for storytelling that speaks truth to power. A journalist, author, and advocate for the LGBT+ community, he has turned a lifelong fascination with literature and investigative journalism into a powerful tool for change. Magolego says growing up queer in a marginalised community, he knew early on that silence was not an option. “Despite South Africa’s progressive legal framework, many LGBT+ individuals continue to navigate daily struggles for dignity, safety, and inclusion. Determined to shift this reality, I wield my pen as a weapon of hope and resistance,” he said. Magolego believes that his debut children’s book, Sipho’s Pink Dress, challenged gatekeepers in the publishing world who believed it was "too much" for young readers. But for him, creating that space for dialogue on gender identity and acceptance was non-negotiable. He added that: “The story, inspired by tragic youth suicides, sparked critical conversations—one young reader even said it changed how he treated others. That, to me, is the real win.” From reporting on transgender medical rights to working for TRT World in Istanbul, his work bridges local struggles and global platforms. With a sequel in the works, upcoming theatre productions, and meaningful merchandise initiatives, his mission is clear: build a world where inclusion isn’t radical—it’s standard. Magolego hopes to be remembered as someone who lived authentically and used his voice to uplift others. His story is one of courage, creativity, and a deep belief in the power of words to change the world.
