Nkosingiphile sibisi

Nominee's Province:
Mpumalanga
Age:
32
Project Name/Description:
The rugged world of mining has at least one feminine touch, thanks to Nkosingiphile, who is breaking gender norms in this tough industry. The 32-year-old mom of two works both above and below ground as a mine overseer, which sees her supervise large teams of miners and strategise on the most effective process to extract gold. Surrounded by men most of the day, Nkosingiphile says she prides herself on an open-door policy and trying to create space for other women to enter the sector. “I enjoy engaging with my colleagues, and as I have risen up through the ranks with promotions, I always try and help other women to do the same. This could mean I assist them to prep for exams or to pass along opportunities.” The young mom says she has committed to improving her circumstances through lifelong learning and has already completed a BTech mining engineering degree, business administration postgraduate certificate, a mine overseer certificate and a mine manager certificate and is currently completing an MBA with the University of Johannesburg.
