Bonnitha Phuthi wanted to simplify domestic work to provide a convenient service when she founded Bonnithamaids (Pty) Ltd. Now up and running, Phuthi is the first one to admit that it was hard, and she hated it all, but now she enjoys what she does. The company, which is located in Roodepoort, West Rand, was established three years ago. It offers services such as renting-a-maid, baby-sitter and gardener. The business has a staff of five employees. Due to the fact that her business is people-centred, it requires people’s skills. The business is also about customer satisfaction. She adds: “Because the business operates within the confines of private homes, it is required of us (she and her staff) to be disciplined, trustworthy and ethical in how we conduct ourselves.” Phuthi reiterates that it has been “a rough journey considering that one needs to be an all rounder — a finance manager, marketing guru, administrator and HR all at once. Also starting without capital made things more complicated and difficult because equipment is expensive but through hard work, persistence and consistency I have managed to keep my business running to date”. She adds: “I believe I have made an impact. I have made a name for myself and created a loyal customer base.”
