Award-winning healthcare professional, Mamello Makhanya, leads a life of great impact. And for this work, she has been recognised through various awards, such as the Gauteng Legislature’s Vita Basadi: Outstanding Youth Philanthropist, Phenomenal Woman: Social Justice, Albertina Sisulu Award courtesy of the University of Johannesburg, as well as the JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons.
Makhanya is the founder of Born to Stand Foundation NPO and Lerato NPC, which is a breast cancer awareness initiative she founded in honour of her late mother.
“Its aim is to teach about breast cancer and also to show love and support to those diagnosed with it and/or who have lost a loved one to it. I aim to grow the initiative and shall work hard and use my healthcare expertise to make it happen,” states Makhanya, who was listed in a book titled “66 Women Who Build a Better Future for South Africa Sixty Six Years Later” alongside the likes of Basetsana Khumalo and Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng.
“There is no impulse greater than a woman who is determined to soar to greater heights. Greater heights means elevating others as well. Greater heights means knowing there is someone out there who is healed because of you. Greater heights means knowing that someone out there did not give up because of you. Greater heights means leaving a mark wherever you go and in whatever you do,” she concludes.
