Communications Officer – Johannesburg Roads Agency
Mosa Makhalima is a familiar name to many South Africans, young and old. She has been delivering traffic reports on major radio stations for more than 20 years, covering most of the SABC stations as well as etv.
Makhalima started her career in media and communications at the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) nearly two decades ago as a young communicator. She holds a national diploma in public relations as well as a post-graduate diploma in business administration. She has been in the mix of the CoJ’s communications all her working life.
In 2000, Makhalima joined the JMPD as a public relations officer and took over traffic reports shortly afterwards. She fell so deeply in love with her morning duty of announcing traffic news that when she left the JMPD for the Johannesburg Roads Agency where she’s currently employed as a communicator. She specifically asked that the function of traffic updates be included in her deliverables.
“Announcing challenges on the road, be it accidents, protests, dysfunctional traffic lights or traffic that is backed up, is something that can save people’s lives and time,” she states.
“My wish is to expand to other radio stations for traffic updates before I retire and hand over the baton to the younger generation,” she says, adding that she’s already mentoring the next generation of traffic reporters as she prepares to exit the space millions of radio listeners will always remember her for.
