Rorisang Gomolemo Thage has been a junior lecturer at the University of South Africa’s department of mining engineering for the past five years. Upon appointment, she was the first and only full-time lecturer to teach mining engineering.  

She’s also the only professional mine surveyor in South Africa with a research focus on open pit mine planning, and serves on the Institute of Mine Surveyors of Southern Africa’s governing council as a co-opted member of the committee responsible for education.  

Thage holds a B.Tech in Mineral Resources Management (UJ), Masters in Mine Planning (Unisa) and is a PhD candidate in the same field. Her contribution to the engineering fraternity was noted when she was a finalist in the 2022 Woman of Stature Awards in the category of Women in Engineering. She has also received an award from the Womandla Foundation in August 2022 in the Rising Star category for Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics as well as being featured in the 2023 Sunday World Unsung Heroes youth celebration project.
