In the centremost city of South Africa, Bloemfontein, lives a limitless construction entrepreneur, community builder and Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) enabler named Tshepiso Modisenyane. As one of the few black women in construction, especially in the Free State, Modisenyane stands as a towering figure of inspiration and a symbol of possibility for many women. She says the engineering space, despite being skewed in favour of men statistically, there are still opportunities for enterprising women.
“The industry gives women opportunities to showcase their capabilities that they can do as much as their male counterparts can do,” she states. “My passion is to see young women thriving. Success is for everyone, no matter where you’re coming from, what is important is where you’re going.”
Modisenyane’s construction company employs three women with civil engineering qualifications. The women are not just employees but mentees as well, as she makes sure that she develops them comprehensively to succeed in construction.
In addition to construction, Modisenyane’s business interests find expression in diverse sectors such as beauty and events, all fuelled by her passion for seeing young women thrive. Again, she collaborates with various departments in the Free State to transform young lives and help SMEs grow.
Her accolades in business and community impact include scooping the 2020 Unsung Heroine: Youth Empowerment, being listed in the Free State Premier’s 2022 Top 50 Most Inspirational Youth as well as receiving a certificate of recognition from the president of the Free State Youth Chamber of Commerce in 2023.
Through her Precious Woman non-profit organisation, Modisenyane organises a charity event that connects small business owners to untapped markets, while offering families a fun opportunity to spend quality time together. She also distributes sanitary towels and other necessities to impoverished learners.
