Weskoppies Hospital made headlines this week, not for ground-breaking treatments, but because the City of Tshwane actually pulled the plug. The lights went off!
Apparently R1.2-million in debt allows the municipality to do that. Patients and staff were probably wondering if this was part of therapy or just pure madness.
Mayor Nasiphi Moya stepped in with the PR version of “Relax, we’ve got this,” claiming that she would not have allowed for the electricity cut if there was no backup at the hospital.
But the question remains, if payment still cannot be made, what kind of message will she try to send?
While the lights may come back on soon, the shade thrown by the public is still hanging thick in the air.
