Stage set for quixotic Rubio to storm at ’em

When politicians start chasing ghosts, the spectacle can be equal parts farce and tragedy.

Take US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who recently vaulted onto the global stage to champion the dire plight of Afrikaners in SA – victims, he claims, of a campaign of “white persecution”. Rubio, of course, is following the well-trodden path of his idol, Donald Trump, who never misses a chance to lob X grenades about some invented South African apocalypse.

But let’s pause for a second: Who actually believes this stuff? Is Rubio angling for a cameo in a Fox News documentary, or is he prepping to hand out US refugee visas to every South African who ever struggled to book a table in Sandton? Shwa finds Rubio’s intervention laughable – loud, baseless, and destined to end in embarrassment.

Maybe he should come witness a real political fight in Johannesburg, where actual power is at stake. Instead, he’s content to stir up fantasy crises from the safety of a Senate office, imagining South Africa as a Game of Thrones rerun, with Afrikaners cast as beleaguered heroes.

The world knows better. SA’s real battles are over metros, coalitions, and who gets to hold the keys.

The only persecution Rubio is in danger of is self-inflicted ridicule – served, as always, on a red (or blue) platter.
