The spirit of the Soweto derby will never die
No matter how agonizingly dreadful Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have been recently, the hype of the Soweto derby will just never die – it will burn to eternity.
It goes without saying that the fixture between Chiefs and Pirates is still the biggest fixture in the southern African hemisphere. Not even the cash-rich African Football League (AFL) final has the capacity to compete with it.
For instance, the inaugural AFL final second-leg final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca was rescheduled by CAF President Patrice Motsepe because he knew that more attention would lean towards the derby than the final that involves his own club.
