In the heart of Khayelitsha, where entrepreneurial energy and cultural vibrancy continue to shape one of Cape Town’s most dynamic communities, a new chapter in township tourism is about to unfold.
Mteto’s Child Villa, a luxury accommodation venture by local businessman Luzuko Mteto, is set to open its doors this April, offering a refined and immersive travel experience rooted in authenticity.
Redefining township hospitality
The launch comes at a time of remarkable growth for South Africa’s tourism sector.
According to South African Tourism, the country welcomed over 10 million international visitors between January and December 2025, a record-breaking figure and a 17.6% increase from the previous year.
Domestic travel has also surged, with two-way passenger numbers rising by 7% to 7.8 million, reflecting a renewed appetite for local exploration.
Against this backdrop, Mteto’s latest venture signals both confidence in the market and a commitment to redefining township hospitality.
A globally competitive offering
Already known for Spine Road Lifestyle, a popular events and entertainment destination in Khayelitsha, Mteto is expanding his footprint with a high-end villa that promises a distinctly local yet globally competitive offering.
“We want to focus on providing exceptional, luxurious and memorable township escape, aiming for a home-away-from-home experience,” says Mteto.
Nestled within Khayelitsha, Mteto’s Child Villa has been carefully designed as a sanctuary for both domestic and international travellers.
The property features five suites, including two presidential suites and three luxury standard rooms.
High-end design
Guests can expect more than just accommodation.
The villa positions itself as a cultural gateway, offering visitors an opportunity to engage meaningfully with the rhythms and realities of township life while enjoying the comforts of high-end design.
“The Villa emphasizes personalised comfort, featuring custom designed furniture and high end interiors, handmade crockery, to pieces of art. We don’t use the word ‘luxury’ loosely, we appreciate and have taken cognisance that our guests, domestic or international, are discerning guests that deserve to be spoiled, therefore aiming to make their stay at Mteto’s Child Villa, both memorable and a cultural reset,” Mteto adds.
The villa is located approximately 24km from Cape Town International Airport and within easy reach of some of the region’s most iconic attractions. These include Cape Winelands, Muizenberg Beach, Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront, placing guests at the intersection of cultural immersion and conventional tourism.
Job creation
Beyond its appeal to travellers, the development also carries tangible local impact.
Tourism contributed nearly 9% to South Africa’s GDP in 2025, supporting approximately 1.8-million jobs nationwide. In Cape Town alone, the sector added R27.5-billion to the economy in 2024 and sustained over 106,000 jobs.
Mteto’s Child Villa will create five permanent positions, adding to the 40 staff already employed at Spine Road Lifestyle, most of whom are young people from Khayelitsha.
