HerStory International Theatre Festival proves future is female

The well-attended seven-day Herstory International Theatre Festival at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani started women’s month with a bang.

Presented by playwright Napo Masheane, the first locally curated theatre festival was held between August 1-7, and saw many women from different walks of life turning out for the opening night.

Elelloang dished out world-class performances, poetry came from Yamoria the twin poets, and soothing music was sung by Buhle Bendalo, Caroline Barole, and AusTebza with her bass guitar.

The Fat Black Women Sing and The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela documentary was narrated by Tekano to commemorate and celebrate women and children.

Masheane shared that she comes from a family of amazing women who are loud and present. “They can tell you who’s a witch, who took whose husband, but also they are prayer warriors,” she said.

“They don’t apologise for taking up space. They taught me that you don’t apologise for your loudness but, more than anything, that it’s within history that her story should always rise.”

Masheane made it possible for young women to achieve their dreams by providing them with artistic abilities they need as part of the HerStory International Theatre Festival.
