This week on The Taste Master SA, the contestants experienced intense emotions as they explored the complex art of handmade pasta.
A masterclass led by Scala Pasta/Bar’s group executive chef Justin Barker and head chef Wesley Roos challenged the contestants to craft filled pasta, like ravioli, from scratch, complete with sauce and garnish.
For Mpho Kgomo, a vibrant cook from Vosloorus, the episode marked the end of her journey as she became the second contestant to be eliminated from the competition.
Despite the heartbreak, Kgomo’s bold flavours and heartfelt attitude left a lasting impression.
Judges’ devastating blow
Reflecting on the challenge, she shared her excitement about mastering pasta-making.
“The biggest surprise was that I actually nailed making the pasta. I have wanted to learn how to make pasta from scratch for a while, and it finally happened. It was a proud moment,” said Kgomo.
For her dish, she crafted seafood-filled pasta, inspired by her first-time experience in Cape Town.
“I wanted to celebrate being here with seafood; it’s the Cape Town vibe,” she explained, her dish telling a story of excitement and discovery.
The judges’ decision to dismiss her was a devastating blow.
“It broke my heart, I won’t lie,” Kgomo admitted. “But I understand why, honestly, it’s Basil’s fault — the Queen of Garnish went home for not garnishing her plate.”
Reflecting on what she would change, she pointed to time management.
“If I had my Sensodyne pin for extra time, I would’ve made it. Those 10 minutes significantly impact the Taste Master’s kitchen.
Confidence booster
Kgomo’s journey was as much about growth as competition.
“I’ve gained so many skills. I learnt to make pasta from scratch and discovered that pap can be deep-fried and still taste amazing.”
The experience also boosted her confidence. “I used to doubt myself, but hearing the judges and customers say ‘we’re proud of you’, showed that I’m doing the most. I have every reason to be proud.”
Though her time on the show has ended, Kgomo’s culinary journey is just beginning.
She plans to grow her cooking page, explore new cuisines, and pursue culinary school to master pastry, inspired by fellow contestants Lucky and Chevonne.
“I want to make an impact and be seen by the restaurants I’ve dreamed of working for. I’m aiming to be the Queen of Pastry.”
