Mercedes-Benz has taken another swing at the premium SUV market with the unveiling of the comprehensively updated GLE and sleeker GLE Coupé, signalling that the Stuttgart brand is not ready to give an inch in one of the most hotly contested luxury segments. According to Mercedes-Benz South Africa, both the GLE and GLE Coupé are scheduled for local introduction in South Africa in the first quarter of 2027.
GLE pedigree
The GLE nameplate carries serious heritage. Mercedes-Benz says the model’s roots stretch back to the original M-Class of 1997, the vehicle widely credited with helping to establish the premium SUV category. Now the German marque has given the latest GLE a major overhaul, with around 3 000 new or revised components aimed at keeping it fresh against increasingly sophisticated rivals.

Visually, the updates are designed to sharpen road presence rather than reinvent the formula. The regular GLE gets a bolder face with star-themed headlamp graphics, a larger grille, illuminated detailing and revised bumpers, while the GLE Coupé leans harder into sporty elegance with a more dramatic front apron, new wheel designs and distinctive three-dimensional star motifs in the rear lamps.
Intelligent in-car experience
Inside, Mercedes-Benz is clearly betting big on digital theatre. Both models receive the brand’s new MB.OS operating system, a cloud-connected architecture designed to support over-the-air updates and a more intelligent in-car experience.

The standard MBUX Superscreen stretches across the dashboard with three 12.3-inch displays beneath one glass surface, while AI integration from partners including Google, Microsoft and ChatGPT is intended to make the voice assistant more natural and more useful in everyday driving. Navigation is now based on Google Maps, and buyers can also spec augmented-reality displays and a head-up display.
Under the skin, Mercedes-Benz says the changes are just as significant. Revised petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains have been engineered to be smoother, more responsive and better prepared for tighter future emissions standards. Among the headline figures is the GLE 580 4MATIC, now producing 395kW and 750Nm, while the GLE 450e plug-in hybrid offers a claimed electric range of 106km on the WLTP cycle. Across the line-up, integrated starter-generator technology and 48-volt electrification feature prominently.

Comfort and chassis sophistication
Mercedes is also pushing comfort and chassis sophistication as key selling points. The new GLE range can be equipped with E-Active Body Control and cloud-based damper regulation linked to Airmatic, allowing the SUV to anticipate speed bumps and adapt suspension settings in advance. That should matter in a segment where ride comfort is just as important as badge appeal. A panoramic sliding sunroof is now standard, while improved air filtration and new cabin materials strengthen the luxury pitch.
When the new arrivals touch down locally in early 2027, they will enter a fiercely competitive battlefield. Key rivals will include the BMW X5 and X6, Audi’s Q7 and Q8, the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport – all of which continue to fight for affluent SUV buyers who want power, presence and the latest technology in one package.
For Mercedes-Benz, then, this is not just another facelift. It is a calculated attempt to protect one of its most important luxury SUV franchises from rivals that are getting sharper with every new model cycle.
