Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has expanded its flagship Land Cruiser 300 line-up with the introduction of new petrol-hybrid derivatives, marking the first time the iconic luxury SUV has been offered with an electrified powertrain in the local market.
The new 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol hybrid models join the existing 3.3-litre diesel range, giving buyers an alternative aimed at combining higher performance with improved efficiency while retaining the Land Cruiser’s renowned off-road capability.
Initially, the hybrid will be available in the premium ZX specification, with the more off-road-focused GR-S derivative scheduled to arrive later this year. The ZX will now be offered exclusively with the hybrid powertrain, while the GX-R and GR-S diesel models remain available.
A 10-speed automatic transmission
Power comes from a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine paired with Toyota’s hybrid electric system, producing a combined 341kW and 790Nm. Drive is channelled through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota says the hybrid delivers smoother and more immediate acceleration while improving fuel consumption to a claimed 10 litres per 100km compared with equivalent internal combustion petrol models.
The electrified Land Cruiser also introduces a waterproof 1,500W AC inverter mounted beneath the centre console, allowing owners to power electrical appliances or provide an emergency power source when required.
New exterior colours
Alongside the new powertrain, Toyota has refreshed the Land Cruiser 300 range with new exterior colours, including Magnetite Black and Classic White, as well as revised interior trim options across selected derivatives.

“The introduction of the new HEV demonstrates that customers no longer have to choose between legendary capability and modern electrified performance.”
Toyota continues multi-pathway strategy
The hybrid models arrive as Toyota continues its multi-pathway strategy, offering petrol, diesel, hybrid and battery-electric vehicles across its broader range rather than committing to a single propulsion technology.
In South Africa’s large luxury SUV segment, the Land Cruiser 300 competes against a broad range of rivals. At the more value-conscious end of the market, it faces the GWM Tank 500, while higher-specification derivatives compete with models such as the Land Rover Defender, Lexus LX, Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7 and the Range Rover.
Pricing for the new hybrid models starts at R2,287,700 for the Land Cruiser 300 ZX HEV, rising to R2,343,800 for the GR-S HEV. The range is sold with a three-year/100 000km warranty, a nine-service/90 000km service plan and an eight-year/160 000km hybrid battery warranty.
