Johannesburg – South Africa recorded 16 078 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours and had 148 more people died of Covid-19 related complications.
This is according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service, who continues the monitoring and surveillance of COVID-19 in order to inform the public health response.
Today’s new infections brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 1,877,143. This increase represents a 24.5 % positivity rate.
A further 148 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 59 406 to date.
The Gauteng province accounts for the majority of new cases (59%), followed by the Western Cape (12 %).
An increase of 607 hospital admissions have been reported in the past 24 hours.
