Action Society, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to promoting civil rights, public safety, and crime prevention, is mourning the loss of Dorcas Lekganyane.
The brilliant young scientist was brutally murdered in what appeared to be a domestic abuse incident.
GBV plaguing the nation
Head of Action Society’s Action Centre, Kaylynn Palm, said gender-based violence (GBV) continues to plague the nation, claiming the lives of thousands of women each year.
“The brutal killing of Miss Lekganyane underscores the urgent need for decisive action to combat this scourge. It is unacceptable that women in South Africa continue to live in fear and face such horrendous acts of violence. Often at the hands of those they trust most,” said Palm.
She went on to say that they are committed to supporting the Lekganyane family in their pursuit of justice.
“We will gladly offer our resources and expertise to ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime are held accountable. Action Society will work tirelessly to support the family and advocate for swift legal proceedings. And [we will] demand stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
Time for less political promises and more action
The newly appointed Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, expressed his grave concern over the killing of women and children. However, Action Society said the time for political promises to address GBV is over.
“We need decisive action. It is imperative that the government move beyond rhetoric. It needs to take concrete steps to protect our women and children from violence. And ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly and effectively.
“Action Society urges all South Africans to join us in our battle against gender-based violence. South Africans must unite as a nation to ensure that the voices of victims are heard. And that justice is served,” concluded Palm.
According to the police, Lekganyane’s body was discovered at a Bramley home on Thursday. Noxolo Kweza, spokesperson for the Gauteng police, stated that a murder case was being probed.
“Her companion was discovered within the residence as well. After being brought to a nearby hospital, he was held under police observation. He’ll be brought up on murder charges and make an appearance in court soon,” said Kweza.
