ANC NEC gives greenlight for Task Team in EC

The ANC national executive committee (NEC) has resolved to turn the Eastern Cape provincial executive committee (PEC) into a provincial task team (PTT).

Consequently, the ANC top seven and the party’s national working committee (NWC) have been mandated to expedite, come up framework and implement the decision without delay.

Our impeccable sources and insiders revealed that this decision comes after the former liberation movement in the “Home of Legends” province failed to hold its provincial conference six weeks ago owing to a high court interdict.

That has led to the term of office for the PEC lapsing, forcing the NEC to give greenlight for a PTT to be constituted.

Constitutional term has lapsed

“The national officials and the NWC have been mandated to process the conversion of the Eastern Cape PEC into a PTT because their constitutional term has lapsed,” said our deepthroat with intimate knowledge of decision-making at Luthuli House.

“The secretary-general Fikile Mbalula will most probably announce the decision at the press conference on Friday.”

Another senior leader in the NEC confirmed: “Yes, the top seven and the NWC have been given the go-ahead to regularise that structure (EC PEC) in line with the constitution of the organisation. They are not disbanded but their term of office is finished.”

Mbalula to hold briefing

Mbalula is due to hold a post-Special NEC press briefing on Friday where he will communicate this among other decisions of the meeting that took place in Cape Town on Wednesday evening.

The provincial conference of the Eastern Cape was halted through a court interdict mounted by two aggrieved members on the day it was meant to start after allegations of irregularities were tabled before the KuGompo High Court, which issued an interim interdict.

At the conference, incumbent provincial chairperson and premier Oscar Mabuyane was billed to lock horns with provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi.

The Eastern Cape will effectively become the third ANC province to be governed by a task team, joining the troubled Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, where electoral support for the party of Nelson Mandela is at the basement level.
