The ANC in Johannesburg has lodged a complaint with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) against the DA.
This after the ANC alleged that ousted City of Joburg speaker, Vasco Da Gama, and mayor Mpho Phalatse have been complicit in an irregular act involving an office bearer in the metro council.
ANC spokesperson Chris Vondo said it has come to the party’s attention that an unknown person called Ruth Leah Knott has been participating in council and mayoral committee, noting that there is no record of Knott on the list of councillors published in the gazette.
“The ANC will be writing to the IEC and acting speaker of council to petition them to investigate the discrepancy of councillor Knott which may put the integrity of the city processes into disrepute,” said the ANC.
“Our understanding as the ANC is that the IEC list is informed by the population register.”
Vondo added that the party will also write to Phalatse to ask who gave Knott the authority to approve advertisements for the recruitment of staff members, and why all appointments must allegedly be submitted to her [Knott’s] office.
“It is our view that this is an interference with the administration and is in breach of all local government prescripts and must be investigated,” said Vondo.
When contacted for comment, Knott hung up. She also failed to respond to questions sent to her.
