Black Coffee’s messy spill

Wife says DJ’s mom, sister attacked her

The tensions and battles in DJ Black Coffee’s marriage to his wife Mbali Maphumulo are spilling out into the public domain like black coffee gushing from a broken coffee mug. Sunday World can exclusively reveal that Mbali and Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, have parted ways after two years of marriage and are heading for divorce.

The shocking tidbits, which will put to bed the couple’s public denials of rumours that their marriage was in turbulent waters, are contained in an application for a protection order by Mbali at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court last month against DJ Black Coffee’s sister Nomalanga Maphumulo.

While Mbali’s application has since been thrown out of the window by the court on account of insufficient evidence, it offers a rare window into troubles at their Parkmore, Sandton home.

In the application, Mbali, who is also known as Enhle, confirms that she’s going through a divorce and suffers depression.

Both Mbali and Black Coffee have previously described as irresponsible rumour that their marriage was disintegrating and they were heading for splitsville.

Speaking to DJ Zinhle a few months ago, Mbali said: “Personally, for me, cheating is an issue, but not as much as the fact that a person sat in front of you and lied to your face every single day. On top of that, it’s with a person we allowed into our home, into our space.”

She also previously told City Press: “I think the public knows nothing and that’s why I let the public throw their assumptions. “I never confirmed or denied anything. Let them speculate until then…”

Yesterday, though, they both refused to comment.

Some on Twitter had claimed that Black Coffee was in a relationship with Frenchbased businesswoman Cathy Guetta – something that he rejected outright.

Sunday World has also learnt that Mbali has deleted her Instagram pictures with Black Coffee and also discarded his surname and reverted to her maiden surname.

Mbali alleged in her papers before court that Nomalanga and Black Coffee’s mother Faith Ndadala arrived at her matrimonial home on September 27 to bully and verbally attack her.

In what seems like a war over assets in the wake of their closely guarded separation, Mbali claimed that Dandala hurled a plethora of insults
at her and even told her that she has no claim on the property as she and Black Coffee were not married in community of property.

She said as she was on the receiving end of Black Coffee’s mother’s insults, Lungi, as Nomalanga is fondly known, arrived like a “ball of fire” and also subjected her to a barrage of abuse.

“Lungi came and was repeating what my motherin- law was saying… that my lawyers can’t do anything as it is not my property. It was getting heated and I left [feeling] bullied, attacked and unsafe,” reads her application in part.

She said when she implored Nomalanga to stop visiting abuse on her, she ignored her and instead threatened her and told her that she didn’t
know who she was and that she would show her.

“I’m going through a divorce and suffer from depression and their act will trigger me. I’m doing well with both psychologist and psychiatrist,” she said.

She asked the court to prohibit Nomalanga from committing any act of domestic violence against her or not to get another person to commit any act of domestic violence against her. She also asked the court to bar Nomalanga from entering the property.
