Body of missing Gqeberha woman found in storm water drain

Police have recovered the body of missing Gqeberha woman, Desiree Baartman, on Tuesday evening. This after the woman, 57, went missing on June 9, 2023.

Police report says Baartman left her house in Nagel Street, Extention 29, Bethelsdorp, and never returned home.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the body was recovered in a storm water drain next to Standford Road near the Jagtersvlakte area.

“At about 9pm last night, SAPS Betheldorp detectives with the assistance of the K9 Search and Rescue and Diving Unit recovered Baartman’s body. It was recovered down a 3,7 metre storm water drain. An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death,” said Naidu.

After a thorough forensic investigation at the house on Saturday, there were signs of possible foul play by her husband, Johnny Baartman.

He made his first appearance before the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday as the key suspect, and is expected back in court on Wednesday on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
