Brian Molefe, Siyabonga Gama arrested again over Transnet ‘graft’

Former Transnet executives Brian Molefe, Siyabonga Gama, Anoj Singh, and Thamsanqa Jiyane were arrested on Monday morning and are currently appearing at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

Henry Mamothame, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority’s investigating directorate against corruption, announced the arrest.

Molefe, Gama, Singh and Jiyane are currently applying for bail. They face charges of fraud, corruption, and theft in connection with a R93-million locomotive procurement deal at Transnet.

Currently serving as MPs for the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, Molefe and Gama are former Transnet CEOs.

Molefe, Gama, and Singh are among nine defendants in a separate Transnet fraud and corruption case that is pending in the Johannesburg High Court.

Trial begins in February 2026

A R400-million Transnet tender is at the centre of this Transnet fraud and corruption case, in which they are suspects.

Molefe, Singh, Gama, Garry Pita, Phetolo Ramosebudi, Regiments Capital directors Niven Pillay and Litha Nyhonhya, Trillian Asset Management director Daniel Roy, and Albatime Pty Ltd owner Kuben Moodley are facing charges of contravening the Public Finance Management Act as well as charges of fraud, money laundering, and corruption.

The charges are related to the 2012 locomotive transaction advisory tender that was given to the McKinsey-led consortium, which led to the purchase of 1 064 locomotives for a total of over R54-billion.

“It is alleged that Regiments Capital, who benefited, was irregularly brought into the contract, increasing the contract value and scope to over R395-million,” said Mamothame previously.

The trial for this case will begin on February 2, 2026.

All the nine accused are each out on R50 000 bail in the separate Transnet fraud and corruption case.
