Meetings held to try get the wife to release the children
Disgraced kwaito star and rape convict Brickz’s family has requested his wife Nqobile Ndlovu to release his two children to visit him in prison on alternate weekends.
Sunday World can reveal that on December 28 last year, members of the Ndlovu family went to Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, to plead with Nqobile to allow the children to visit their father, Brickz, real name Sipho Ndlovu, in prison.
The Sweety My Baby and Tjovitjo hitmaker was convicted of raping his then 16-year-old relative in 2013.
He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Brother Zwelethu Ndlovu declined to speak about how Brickz was coping and about his request to get visits from his kids. “I’m not sure where you get this story from, but we are
not allowed to speak to the media,” said Zwelethu.
But a source close to the family, who also did not want to be named for fear of victimisation
by the family elders, said Brickz was struggling to cope in prison after he was not allowed to see his children.
“We won’t stop until we get access to the kids as it’s really killing him. He’s helpless. We don’t want anything from anyone. As the Ndlovu family we are just asking for her to allow him access to his kids, that’s all,” said the source.
A family representative, who asked to remain anonymous and was present in the meeting, said the family strongly believes that a child has the right to know both their parents.
“As a family, we believe it is every child’s right to know their father even if there are differences between the parents. He is still their son-in-law. He insisted on doing things the right way since he paid lobola,” said the representative.
The family has been going back and forth with Nqobile’s family to get them to agree to the
visitations and another meeting is scheduled for next month.
“As a family, we believe this issue is important not only for Sipho, but to the children. Our
arrangement is to visit again in April, but we are not sure of the challenges we could face with the [coronavirus] restrictions on travelling. He [Brickz] is always enquiring about his children,” said the representative.
Attempts to get hold of Nqobile drew a blank as her phone rang unanswered. She also
did not respond to remove text messages.
Brickz and Nqobile’s friend, Boipelo Mokoena, said that she found it hard to believe that the
couple was no longer on speaking terms.
Brickz was not available for comment.
“They were husband and wife but were also like friends. Sipho was there when his last child was born and he had an amazing relationship with his daughter.
“Now that he isn’t even allowed to speak to her on the phone, you can tell that it’s breaking him,” said Mokoena.
Another mole explained that Brickz also has an older son from his previous relationship whom he was able to spend time with in prison.
“His son celebrated his birthday with him in February. You
should have seen how much joy it brings him.
“But I know that if he is given a chance to see his daughter, he would be uplifted.
“This rehabilitation process is not easy. It is breaking him daily,” said the mole.
