Case of man who ‘threatened’ Cyril Ramaphosa, Cape Town mayor postponed

The case of 28-year-old Phillip Sebole Masango, who is accused of threatening the CEO of a Cape Town-based company, City of Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, and President Cyril Ramaphosa, has been rescheduled for Thursday.

Masango made his third appearance at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of intimidation.

Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, the Hawks spokesperson, informed Sunday World that Masango’s bail information necessitated the postponement of the case.

Masango remains in police custody. He appeared in court for the first time on May 26 and again on June 2.

The Hawks’ crime against the state unit (Cats), a division of the serious organised crime investigation unit, arrested Masango in May in Germiston, east of Johannesburg.

He was apprehended after a criminal case was reported in May.

Numerous threatening messages

“On Monday, May 12, a complainant, the chief executive officer of a Cape Town-based company, allegedly received a voice message from the suspect that contained threats against the president of South Africa,” said Mbambo after Masango’s arrest.

“The suspect is also alleged to have sent multiple threatening messages targeting the complainant, her family, and the executive mayor of Cape Town.

“The matter was reported to the Cape Town-based Hawks’ Cats team, which conducted a swift investigation that resulted in the suspect’s apprehension in Gauteng.”

In the meantime, as part of Youth Month events, Ramaphosa will meet with young people in Pretoria who are beneficiaries of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention and Presidential Employment Stimulus initiative.

Ramaphosa is scheduled to visit three locations – the Saulsville’s Sefako Makgatho Primary School, the South African Creative Industries Incubator in Eersterust, and the Foundation for Professional Development in Pretoria East.

Furthermore, under the direction of the Department of Electricity and Energy, Ramaphosa will speak at the first Africa Green Hydrogen Summit, which is set to take place in Cape Town from Thursday to Friday.
