Cele visits Port Edward following killing of cop and his family

The police in KwaZulu-Natal have launched a manhunt following the murder of Warrant Officer Roger Mavundla and his family in Port Edward at the weekend.

The 49-year-old Mavundla, his wife and children aged seven, 10 and 17 were shot inside a vehicle they were travelling in on Saturday. The officer, his wife and two children died on the scene while the seven-year old child is recovering in hospital.

Lirandzu Themba, spokesperson for the Police Ministry, said: “Police Minister Bheki Cele and the SA Police Service management, led by General Fannie Masemola, will on Tuesday visit Port Edward following the murder of Warrant Officer Roger Mavundla and three members of his family.

“The Police Ministry continues to call for the harshest sentences for the murderers of police officers.”

Twenty-two police officers were killed between July and September 2022, according to Themba.

During his visit, Cele will also be briefed about the crime patterns in the area and interventions in place to deal with violent and contact crimes.
