Cops make another breakthrough in Gqeberha taxi driver’s murder

The Nelson Mandela Bay district intervention task team has arrested another suspect in the murder of a taxi driver in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.

The man was taken into custody on Friday, according to the police, and he is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Tuesday alongside his co-accused.

The detective team’s intelligence and the police national head office task team helped apprehend the suspect at a Kenton-On-Sea residence.

The suspect is accused of being involved in the March murder of 44-year-old Ansley Agulhas at the taxi rank next to the Brister House building on Govan Mbeki Avenue.

According to the police, two unidentified men with their faces covered approached the 44-year-old cab driver as he was standing close to his vehicle.

The deceased was shot several times by one of the suspects in a black hoodie before making their escape on foot down a side street towards Strand Street.

Killings in taxi industry getting more common

The police confirmed that prior to the most recent arrest on Friday, another man had been taken into custody.

The second suspect is accused of possessing both an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition after it was discovered that he had a gun and one live round of ammunition.

“The suspect (42) will appear in the Kenton-On-Sea magistrate’s court on Tuesday, and thereafter he will appear in the Gqeberha magistrate’s court on charges of murder during the week,” said police spokesperson Captain Sandra Jense van Rensburg.

Taxi driver killings have become more common nationwide. Gauteng has also recorded similar gruesome incidents recently.

Recently, three taxi marshals from the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association were shot dead in Mofolo Central, Soweto, as they were making their way to the office from the ranks, and a taxi driver was shot and killed in Diepkloof while getting a haircut.

High-calibre cartridges were discovered at the scene in Mofolo, according to police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

Investigations are ongoing, though, and no one has been taken into custody, she said.
