Corporate SA firms commemorate World Food Safety Day

As the world celebrates World Food Safety Day (June 8), businesses that are serving in the food industry have put the spotlight on food safety incidents.

This is the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) sixth World Food Safety celebration. This year, attention is on potential or confirmed health risks associated with food consumption.

According to WHO, foodborne infections impact one in every 10 individuals worldwide each year. Recently, children in Gauteng and Eastern Cape became victims of food poisoning, some even lost their lives. A food incident can happen due to accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud, faults or natural events.

Sasol pledges support through its outlets

Global chemicals and energy giant Sasol, supported this global initiative. They also sell food to the company’s customers at its outlets countrywide.

Sasol joined hands with Assurecloud in celebrating the day. They did this by informing South African consumers about the importance of safe, hygienic storage and preparation of food and beverage products.

According to Sasol, the day aligns with their commitment to being customer centric and protecting the health of the communities in which it operates.

Managers and franchise owners at Sasol’s 300 Sasol Convenience Centres took a pledge. They reiterated their commitment to adhering to the most rigorous food safety standards.

Pamela Anderson, Senior Manager for Convenience Trading at Sasol, said the pledges are backed up by inspections. These are based on regulation 638, a regulation under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act. This is Act No. 54 Of 1972, and inspections are from Sasol’s food safety partner, Assurecloud.

Partnership commits to making food safety a priority

“Millions of South Africans stop at our Convenience Centres to get sustenance on their way to various destinations. World Food Safety Day is a great opportunity to underline what we are doing as Sasol. This to comply with the strictest quality and safety standards.

“After several major food incidents in South Africa in recent years, we know there is no room for complacency,” Anderson added.

Meanwhile Marina Sander, Head of Sales at Assurecloud, confirmed their commitment. She said their collaboration with Sasol exemplifies their mutual commitment to making the world a safer place. This is driven by the understanding that life is precious.
