The senseless murder of a four-year-old boy led to the arrest of a 31-year-old mother and her 26-year-old boyfriend on Thursday evening.
The child was reportedly killed by the couple last year and buried in a shallow grave surrounded by bushes on the outskirts of Boitekong in Rustenburg, North West.
According to the police, the residents of extension 4 noticed that the child was not playing outside as he used to and reported the matter to law enforcement.
According to the evidence, Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda Funani claimed that neighbours last saw the child in July 2023.
Mother of the child confesses
“Their inquiries began, but the mother would fabricate tales. This week, members of the community decided to involve their councillor, and they approached the mother, who allegedly confessed,” said Funani.
“She allegedly disclosed that she and her boyfriend killed the child and buried him in a shallow grave in the bushes.”
The mother and her boyfriend were turned over to the police and charged with murder.
Couple in court on Monday
The duo is scheduled to appear before the Rustenburg magistrate’s court on Monday.
The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident.
Kwena also commended the community members for cooperating with the police to apprehend the suspects rather than taking the law into their own hands.
He instructed the detectives to do everything in their power to ensure that justice is served.
